This workshop aims to explore and develop our understanding of what values, value and worth should mean to HCI, if they are to have impact as the next wave of HCI.
Although ‘value-centred HCI’ is open to many different interpretations (from the human impact of our work to the price someone might pay), we want to include all these different possibilities in order to see if we can create a map of the territory where they can all coherently co-exist.
This workshop will proceed through discussion of three areas and we invite people to submit position papers touching on any of these:
- STORIES: the sharing of stories where a project led to an awareness of the importance of value(s) or worth, or where failure to address value(s) had an impact, etc etc.
- PERSPECTIVES: how should we interpret the meaning of value, values and worth? Is value-centered really a new wave, following on from the prevailing context-centered point of view?
- RESEARCH AGENDA: What new research projects / areas can we see becoming part of HCI if we embrace the notion of value-centred?
Our intended audience includes researchers in HCI, industry practitioners and designers whose work is focused on the user and the delivery of value to them.Individuals interested in participating should submit a position paper, 2-4 pages in length. Participant position papers should either (i) situate the participant’s interests and background among the themes of the workshop, or (ii) report on preliminary research findings or case studies in value-centered HCI - based around one of stories, perspectives or agendas.
Position papers should conform to the CHI 2008 Extended Abstracts format. To participate, at least one author is required to register for the workshop and one day of CHI 2008.
Submissions should be uploaded to this site.Deadline for submissions is 5:00pm (1700) Pacific Time, November 5, 2007.Notification of acceptance by November 28, 2007.
